Congratulations Robin Cummings Mlynar - Winner of this month's triva question! Her answer is posted below:
1) Ancient Celts celebrated the New Year on what date? Commonly celebrated October 31- November 1, it can also be celebrated on the date of first frost, or when the last of the harvest is in and the ground is dry enough to have a bonfire.
2) What did they call this holiday? Samhain, also spelled Samain, but can also be called Féile Moingfhinne.
This month's trivia question has two parts - (Kathryn would know the answer to both questions!)
1) Ancient Celts celebrated the New Year on what date?
2) What did they call this holiday?
Winner (of a $5 Starbucks card) announced on October 31..
Captain Herdman stated the following at court in 1722:
"Ye and each of you are adjudged and sentanced to be carried back to the place from when you came, from thence to the place of execution without the gates of this castle, and there within the flood marks to be hanged by the neck till you are dead, dead, dead. The Lord have mercy on your souls."
At whose execution was this statement made?
(clue - there were more than one)
Congratulations to SUNNY B - the winner of the August trivia question. Check out the winning answer:
SunnyB: I have an answer for your Aug. trivia question...This particular version of the time-honored sentance was invoked at the trial of 160 men under the famous pirate, Bartholomew Roberts, who had been killed by one of the first broadsides in a battle with the Brittish ship, Swallow, off the cape of Cape Lopez. The trial was conducted in Cape Coast Castle. By the time the trial ended, 52 men had been hanged, 20 men were sentanced to 7 years servitude in the mines at Cape Coast, and 17 had been condemned to incarceration in the notorious Marshalsea Prison in London. (you can view his answer posted under his profile in the Members Area)
