Kathryn raised her eyes to the black sky and studied the luminous body once again.
“Silver night…the omen of death,” she whispered aloud to herself in disbelief.
Perched just overhead the moon hovered menacing, a macabre reminder of deadly power encompassing the waters of the Caribbean. A faint silver glow emanated from the orb which was sprayed with droplets of blood-red shadows giving the illusion the moon was bleeding. The midnight air was black and still and the silvery radiance cast an eerie light, illuminating the surface of the water. The same silver light crept over the entire ship. No longer did the waters churn or the skies lash out the storm’s fury. All was hushed, waiting, prey to the demonic moon. It was as if the Revenge and her crew had stopped breathing too, along with the sea which had paused its rise and fall of deep water swells. All eyes were turned heavenward, fearful of the demon that possessed the night skies.Out of the mist, a faceless shriek pierced the dank silence enveloping the ship and just as suddenly, it was cut off.
“A pirate’s life is always hard, Kat. Ye’ve born it well enough an’ ye’ve many fine years ahead though th’ direction ye sail may be different than that ye planned for. Still, all is in God’s hands an’ it fares best for those who let Him steer course,” Winne smiled gently as she spoke.
